Gentoo Linux, a special flavor of Linux that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme configurability, performance and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience. Thanks to a technology called Portage, Gentoo Linux can become an ideal secure server, development workstation, professional desktop, gaming system, embedded solution or something else -- whatever you need it to be. Because of its near-unlimited adaptability, we call Gentoo Linux a metadistribution.
Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with the steps necessary to build your own custom Linux system. The most important reason for LFS's existence is teaching people how a Linux system works internally. Building an LFS system teaches you about all that makes Linux tick, how things work together, and depend on each other. And most importantly, how to customize it to your own taste and needs.
Lunar is a source based Linux distribution developed by a talented team of programmers from all over the world, and offers a unique package management system which builds each software package, or module, from scratch for the machine in which it is being installed. Once installed, Lunar is remarkably fast, breaking new ground in flexibility and in the options it offers the individual user.
ROCK is a Distribution Build Kit. You can configure your personal build of ROCK and easily build your own distribution (see the screenshots). It is software for managing operating environments. In a way it is a software development toolkit for building OS solutions. Most of the ROCK Linux development is done on ix86 Hardware. But ROCK Linux also supports the Alpha AXP, PowerPC, Sparc32/Sparc64 and MIPS architectures. Others will follow.
Source Mage GNU/Linux is a source-based Linux distribution based on a magical metaphor of "casting" and "dispelling" programs, which are referred to as "spells". In multi-tasking style, it downloads the sources in the background while compiling in the foreground. Source Mage's "sorcery" offers advanced package management, but retains the choices, options, and control not offered by many other distributions.
T2 is not just a common Linux distribution - it is a flexible open source System Development Environment or Distribution Build Kit if your are more familiar with that term. T2 allows the creation of custom distributions with bleeding edge technology. T2 started as a community driven fork from the ROCK Linux Project with the aim to create a decentralized development and clean a framework for spin-off projects and customized distributions.
